Purpose: Used to present your business opportunity to investors, partners, prospects, the media, and other stakeholders, generally in 60 seconds or less.
Key Attributes: Very high-level overview of the business and opportunity-- in it's most literal sense, it is the amount of information you can convey to a stranger in a short elevator ride. Typically includes an overview of the business and opportunity, market, target customers, and any relevant traction or progress. Pertinent management experience may also be highlighted, along with any name-brand customers or partners. Generally created after the development of a business plan and executive summary (in other words, just as the executive summary is a condensed form of the business plan, so is the elevator pitch a condensed form of the executive summary).
Note: this critical piece of collateral can often be the most difficult to create, as each word carries significant weight.
Who Needs It:
» Entrepreneurs, startups, established firms-- in short, everyone
» Companies seeking seed, angel, and venture capital investment
» Companies seeking advisors, key hires, press & publicity.
What It Does:
» Aligns the company's mission and messaging among founders and team members
» Serves to succinctly convey what the company does and for whom (aka, "why the world needs your
company")
» Leads to a longer discussion, a meeting, or a request for more information.
